Orthodontic Uncovering

When a tooth does not properly erupt, it can cause problems within your mouth including crooked teeth, cysts and even infections. The impacted tooth can be detrimental to your overall health, which is why orthodontic uncovering is offered. This process guides the tooth into the proper position, promoting good overall oral health.

How the Process Works

The process of orthodontic uncovering begins with a maxillofacial surgeon uncovering the tooth from the excessive tissue or bone that is keeping it impacted. Every case is different, but the most common surgeries that are performed are removal or repositioning of gum tissue or removal of bone that lies in the way of the erupting tooth. Once the tooth is exposed, an orthodontic wire is attached to allow the orthodontist to gently guide the tooth into its proper place. The process is typically performed before orthodontic treatment begins in the mouth, but it is also used during treatment, depending on the preference of your orthodontist.

The Importance of the Procedure

Impacted teeth can cause a variety of problems inside the mouth. If left untouched, the tooth can cause damage to the roots of surrounding teeth, posing even more problems inside the mouth. Rather than allowing the tooth to cause extensive damage, orthodontic uncovering can be performed to ensure the overall health of your oral cavity. The process is not difficult and one the tooth is uncovered, the orthodontic process can take between 3 to 12 months to properly move the tooth into its place.

Straight teeth are more than a cosmetic issue; they also impact your overall dental health. If there is an impacted tooth, it can cause misalignment throughout your mouth, making it difficult for orthodontic treatment to be successful. Uncovering an impacted tooth is not only aesthetically pleasing, but essential for your future oral health.
